Carotid Web as a Cause of Ischemic Stroke in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Preliminary Monocentric Descriptive Study of 6 Cases Collected at the Fann Teaching Hospital (Senegal)

Introduction: Carotid web (CW), a rare and probably unknown arterial cause of ischemic stroke (IS), is commonly reported in young black patients, although most the published cases resided non-African country. We describe features first six Senegalese diagnosed at Neurology Department Fann Teaching Hospital Dakar. Patients Method: It was preliminary retrospective prospective study conducted department teaching hospital (Dakar-Senegal). The symptomatic CW diagnosis based on angioCT-scan neck arteries. National Institute Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) modified-Rankin (mRS) were used to assess severity IS functional disability after event, respectively. LDL cholesterol level 1.52 g/L 0.49. initial NIHSS 15 (8-22). Half had severe (NIHSS ≥ 15). For secondary prevention, half treated aspirin other acenocoumarol. After 18 months 17 follow-up, mRS score 2 1 (1-3). Conclusion: an An early appropriate multidisciplinary management could help reduce recurrences.
